Is it for you? Studying and Working with Horses

Learn from an equine industry professional

Deciding on a career working with horses is easy for some, but it may be a trickier one for others, particularly if you are thinking about a career change.  In this video, industry professional, Marcia Devenney talks about her experiences working alongside individuals who are studying and working in the equestrian industry and her suggestions for those thinking of doing the same.

Key Points from Marcia about starting out your career working with horses

Studying and working with horses can open up a variety of career paths for students. Some may discover a passion for teaching, coaching, or training horses, while others may decide to pursue a veterinary degree.

Regardless of the specific path, Marcia emphasises the importance of:-

  • developing a strong foundation in general horsemanship,
  • an understanding of feeding,
  • being able to hande horses safely, and
  • working calmly with large animals.

This baseline knowledge can be invaluable as students explore their interests and determine their future goals.

Marcia also cautions that the equine industry may not be for everyone, as it can involve long, sometimes anti-social hours. However, she encourages students to not be discouraged, as the industry offers fantastic opportunities, especially for those interested in working internationally.

Looking back at her own experiences, Marcia even recommends to aspiring young professionals to consider seeking out positions in large, prestigious yards in the UK, Europe, or the United States to gain valuable experience and exposure to the practices of industry leaders.
